The Exchange: Conversations in Arts Music & Culture

Our first conversation is with music icon Darryl "DMC" McDaniels from the internationally renowned, groundbreaking Hip-Hop group Run-D.M.C.  McDaniels has been “devastatingly controlling” the microphone since 1981 and shows no sign of ever stopping. From the quintessential classics of “Sucker MC’s”, It’s Tricky”, “Rockbox” and “My Adidas” just to name a few, McDaniels along with group members Jospeh “Run” Simmons and Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell, they helped bring a voice and a soundtrack of the urban streets of New York to a world hungry to hear what they had to say. A native New Yorker, McDaniels has stretched his influence far further than the realms of music. From his continuous charity work with children in the foster care and adoption system to his boundless expression though his artfully done comic books and graphic novels; Darryl McDaniels is a resounding example of how drive, heart and passion can change not only a life but the lives of others.  He spoke with GRYSCL Entertainment at Universal Audenried Charter High School in South Philadelphia for a brief moment before addressing an auditorium of Audenried’s top scholars in the Junior and Senior classes with Philadelphia native and fellow music legend Kenny Gamble (of the song writing duo Gamble & Huff).  McDaniels speaks to GRYSCL about the movement and industry that we call hip-hop, the future of the culture he contributed to and the architects that helped to set the foundation.
